New Year in Dubai: 3 Trip Plans, Best Visa, Avoid Stress
New Year in Dubai: 3 Trip Plans, Best Visa, Avoid Stress

Thursday, 31 December 2026. At midnight the Burj Khalifa lights up, and the city counts down to 2027. Planning New Year in Dubai? Then your visa choice depends on one thing: how long you will stay.
Here is the short answer. A 30-day tourist visa suits most fireworks trips. If you stay for the shopping festival too, choose 60 days. People who leave and come back need a multiple-entry visa. Below, we explain each plan and the one date rule that catches travellers out.
We are Sky Palace Tourism L.L.C, an independent visa support service in Al Mankhool, Dubai. We are not part of the UAE government, and approval is always decided by the UAE authorities.
What is confirmed for the New Year weekend?
Some facts are fixed already. Others will only come in December, so it helps to know which is which.
New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027, is a public holiday under the UAE's fixed holiday list. As a result, The National reports a three-day weekend for residents, with work starting again on Monday 4 January. So expect busy roads, malls and beaches from Thursday evening to Sunday.
The Dubai Shopping Festival also runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027. So the fireworks fall right in the middle of it. That is why many families stay longer than they first planned.
What is not confirmed yet? As of 29 October 2026, we have not seen 2026/27 ticket details for the paid Burj Park viewing area. In past years Emaar sold these in the autumn. For example, Khaleej Times reported that 2024/25 tickets went on sale on 24 October. Other Downtown viewing areas were free that year. Fireworks sites, Metro hours and road closures are usually announced in late December.
The 60-day entry rule, explained with dates
This rule matters more than any other for a New Year trip. The ICP visa issuance conditions are clear. You must enter the UAE within 60 days of the issue date.
So timing matters in both directions. Apply too late and you join the December rush. Apply too early, however, and the visa can expire before your flight.
Here is an example. A visa issued on Sunday 1 November 2026 must be used by about Thursday 31 December. That is too close for a New Year's Eve arrival, because one flight delay puts entry at risk.
For a late-December arrival, our advice is simple. Apply from about the middle of November, once your flights are booked. Then check the "enter by" date on the visa the day it arrives. Our processing times page shows how long each option usually takes.
Plan 1: the short fireworks trip
A common New Year trip is four or five nights. For example, a traveller might fly in on Tuesday 29 December and fly home on Sunday 3 January.
For this trip, a 30-day single-entry tourist visa is enough. You enter once, see the fireworks, and then leave well inside the 30 days. There is no need to pay for a longer visa.
Book a return ticket before you apply, because the ICP conditions list a return ticket for most visit visas. Also keep a hotel booking ready. Downtown and Business Bay hotels fill early for 31 December, but we cannot tell you exact prices.
Plan 2: fireworks plus the shopping festival
Some visitors want the full winter season. They arrive in early December, enjoy the shopping festival, see the fireworks, and leave in mid-January.
Count the days carefully here. From Friday 4 December to Sunday 17 January is 45 days. That is longer than a 30-day visa allows, so a 60-day visa is the right choice for this plan.
Also remember the overstay fine. The ICP conditions set it at AED 50 for each extra day. A late flight home on 18 January is not a reason to stay past your visa end date.
Plan 3: two trips around the holidays
Some travellers leave the UAE and come back. For instance, a family might visit for National Day on 2 December and then take a short trip to Oman. After that, they return for 31 December.
A single-entry visa ends when you exit. Therefore, this plan needs a multiple-entry visa, so you can come back without a new application. Ask us before you book the side trip, because the dates must fit inside the visa period.
Which visa fits your New Year in Dubai trip?
| Your plan | Typical dates | Visa that fits |
| Short fireworks trip | 29 Dec 2026 to 3 Jan 2027 | 30-day single entry |
| Fireworks plus shopping festival | 4 Dec 2026 to 17 Jan 2027 | 60-day single entry |
| Two trips with a side visit | Early December, then 31 Dec | Multiple entry |
| Last-minute booking | Flights booked after mid-December | Ask about the express service |

Papers to check before you apply
These small problems are easy to fix in November but hard to fix on 30 December.
- Passport validity. The ICP asks for at least six months of validity. Count from your arrival date, not from today.
- Health insurance. Most visit visa categories list valid health insurance for the UAE. Buy it for the full trip, not only the holiday weekend.
- A clear photo. A blurred phone photo usually means a new upload and a lost day.
- Children's visas. Every child needs their own passport and their own visa, even on a parent's booking.
Rules differ by nationality, so also check our visa requirements by nationality before you upload.

New Year visa questions
Can I apply for a New Year visa in October?
You can, but it may be too early for a late-December trip. The visa must be used within 60 days of issue. So for an arrival around 31 December, applying from mid-November is safer.
Is 1 January 2027 a holiday in Dubai?
Yes, Friday 1 January 2027 is a public holiday in the UAE. Because Saturday and Sunday follow, the city stays busy for three days.
Do I need a ticket to watch the fireworks?
Not always. In past years the Burj Park area was paid, but other Downtown areas were free. Details for 2026/27 had not been announced when we wrote this.
Can I extend my visa if I want to stay for the festival?
The ICP says a visit visa can be extended, but the total stay cannot pass 120 days. Still, it is simpler to choose a 60-day visa from the start. More answers are on our visa FAQs page.
The fireworks will not wait for a late visa. Pick the plan that matches your dates, then apply for your Dubai visa online in the right week. We will check your papers first, so your New Year in Dubai starts calmly at the airport.
